Extreme Physics was a new project for 2009. Hosted at Oakham School and Rugby School it was a residential course aimed to inspire year 10 students from around the East Midlands to study Physics beyond GCSE level. For 2010, Extreme Physics moved to Rugby School where, due to increased demand, two courses ran back-to-back.
Twenty-four schools took part in the course, sending four students and a teacher each. The students were given opportunities to listen to short lectures given by exciting speakers on various extreme topics as well as undertake practical activities such as making and launching paper rockets, building a 'one minute timer' from a limited selection of items, try rock climbing and experience sky diving in a wind tunnel!
A team of six student helpers comprising current A-Level students and University Undergraduates awarded points to the school teams as challenges were completed. As well as being responsible for the team competition the student helpers were also charged with ensuring that the course ran smoothly and, most importantly, that everyone had fun!
